SJ Okemow is a Nehiyaw and Eastern European multidisciplinary artist. She belongs to Bigstone Cree Nation on (Treaty 8) and grew up in Calgary (Treaty 7).
She is a newly appointed Assistant Professor in the Experimental Animation program at OCADU. She holds a BSc in Physiology and an MSc in Medical Art and is currently completing her PhD remotely in the University of New South Wales’s 3DX Lab in Sydney, also known as Warrang.
She is a Board Certified Medical Illustrator and a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) And the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI). It is through her art practice that she tries to parse together thoughts about her Nehiyaw identity, her relation to land, place, nationhood, and her experiences as a science student and as a professional medical artist.
