Nisitohtamowin

• The first framework teaching comes from  Absolon’s Eastern doorway reference of Identity/location (77). This for me called to our own Nehiyaw teachings of Nisitohtamowin which I first discuss in chapter 1.

Preparation

• The second Eastern framework teaching of Preparation comes from Kovach's framework characteristics of Researcher Preparation and Research Preparation (51). Kovach details the importance of preparation not just in terms of research design but also includes cultural protocols.

Relationships

• Relationships as a framework teaching comes from Absolon’s Southern Doorway teachings reminding us of our kinship systems which “serve to connect threads between individuals, families and communities and extend beyond biology” (Absolon 80).

Gathering Knowledge

• Gathering knowledge is the third circle in Kovach’s framework. I use these in tandem to describe my process of being on the land gathering sound recordings as well as editing the sound. I describe how I use jingle dress audio recordings as the inputs for the creation of a generative system involving the molecular model creating a complex web of relation first through sound.

Anti-coloniality

• Comes from Absolon’s Western doorway teachings and anti-colonial methodology creates a tension with western dominant science which often overlooks and invalidates personhood and subjective knowledges.

Asserting Indigenous Knowledge Systems

• Also comes from Absolon’s Western doorway where she discusses how “recovery of traditional knowledge [are] deeply intertwined with the process of decolonization.”
